A look at the players who may have doubts over their long-term futures at Liverpool as Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards set for bigger test of their credentials
Liverpool are winning the fight for the Premier League title – but there still may be players fighting for their long-term future at the club. The Reds have run away in the title race with a 12-point lead over Arsenal and just nine games to go. There’s a growing feeling that there might be some change in the squad this summer at Anfield.
The futures of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all remain in doubt. How those contract talks pan out may have a knock-on effect to other parts of the squad if deals get done or don’t.
Will Liverpool need a new starting centre-back? Will they need another right-wing attacker for Arne Slot’s three-pronged front line or competition for Conor Bradley at full-back? They may not need any of those positions filled if all three stay but there are other areas where there still might be change either way.
Darwin Nunez is a player whose future is up in the air. There has been speculation about a move to Saudi Arabia since January. There are doubts on Merseyside if he can fulfil the No.9 role after three seasons of inconsistency.
The cultish love for him is waning and the £85m deal – albeit with many clauses yet to be triggered to get to that figure – is now under stern examination about what could be made back if they cut losses now.
Andy Robertson is aware about Liverpool being linked with left-backs as he said as much this week. The Scotland captain is not concerned. The speculation about Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez continues to grow but, it is understood, that there’s been no moves on that front yet.
Harvey Elliott is a player who is frustrated by his lack of playing time but torn by his love of Liverpool. Yet again, this is a big summer for him. There will be exits of younger players like most summers. Tyler Morton is unlikely to be at Anfield beyond the summer as one example. Will Stefan Bajcetic return to the first team after a season on loan?
What will happen with Caoimhin Kelleher now the Reds are bringing in Georgia shot stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili to seemingly tussle with Alisson for the No 1 spot is another question. Contracts remain issues outside of the aforementioned three. Ibrahima Konate does not have to prove himself at Liverpool but the France international is getting close to the final 12 months of his deal.
A new contract offered remains unsigned. Is he waiting to see where his stock in this squad is when other matters are resolved one way or the other? Joe Gomez’s future was thrown into doubt last summer and despite moving up the pecking order until injury wrecked his campaign, will he be considering his movements again?
Luis Diaz is coming up to just two years left on his contract. It’s that crucial time of whether the club decide they want him committed for another five or start thinking about making money from a sale.
There is expected to be more business this summer at Liverpool than last year when just Federico Chiesa arrived. It would be wrong to call it a summer of upheaval. This is a squad which is winning the Premier League title at a canter.
But we are expecting to see a much bigger test of the credentials of sporting director Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards in the coming months. They got the appointment of Arne Slot to replace Jurgen Klopp spot on. Now the challenge of developing this title-winning squad.
