Food expert Phil Bianchi has revealed his top secret to getting rid of bad breath without having to do an emergency trip to the supermarket for some chewing gum or mints. Plus, it’ll only set you back 16p
Save yourself from an embarrassing bad-breath emergency with this little-known hack.
Whether it’s the dreaded morning breath, or a post-garlic bread whiff – nobody wants to be that person who makes others wince as soon as they open their mouths. It’s something everyone has experienced at least once in their life, even if you pride yourself on your good oral hygiene.
But, if you find yourself in this humiliating situation and have run out of mints or chewing gum, there is no need to worry. According to a food expert, there is a 16p kitchen staple that will leave your breath fresh as a daisy in no time, and moisten up that dry mouth. Phil Bianchi from the Gift Of Oil warns persistent smelly breath, also known as halitosis, can be a warning sign of serious oral issues which should be flagged to a dentist. In the meantime, he recommends sucking on a lemon to neutralise those unpleasant odours.
“Lemon is quite an acidic fruit, so although it’s not great for teeth in general, a small amount can really help any issues with bad breath,” he said. “If you’re out for dinner, sneak a slice of lemon away from the table and keep it to one side. Snack on it after your meal for a breath-saving emergency snack.”
You can pick up lemons from your nearest supermarket or greengrocers if you want to give the hack a go. A four-pack from Aldi will set you back 65p, which works out at just 16p per lemon. If you’re not keen on the sour taste of lemon, or have sensitive teeth, Phil says the humble apple works just as well. “Dentists recommend apples as a healthy snack for teeth as they have multiple oral health benefits,” he added.
“Chewing apples helps make saliva, which can get rid of bacteria and lingering smells. Apples are particularly good at reducing any bad breath caused by eating raw garlic.” The expert says olive oil, cinnamon, greek yoghurt and basil are also smell-busting foods that can help you freshen up before that smooch.
