4 house plants that can repel flies including one that costs just £1.50

There’s nothing worse than a fly buzzing around your head when you’re trying to relax in your home – but there are several plants that will help to keep them at bay

Even with the weather getting colder, house flies are still a common sight, and difficult to get rid of. You could seal your house up tight, closing every door, window, nook and cranny, but that’s hardly a way to live.

Another option might be to douse your fly-ridden home with a load of harsh chemicals you can’t even pronounce or swat them away with a tea towel.

However, there is a better solution out there that will also make your home smell wonderful. Instead of using any types of sprays, experts at Perfect Plants recommend several plants that will repel these pests, reports the Express.

They advised: “Fill your windowsills and kitchens with pots or vases of the following to help deter insects.”

1. Basil

Basil emits natural oils that produce a rich, earthy scent that will ward off flies and other outdoor pests.

The pros stated: “A pot of growing basil is not just tasty in pesto sauce, in salads, soups, with fish and on pasta, but it makes your room smell fresh and clean too. What’s more, flying insects and other bugs tend to stay away from the aroma of the foliage as they can’t stand it.”

Simply rustle the leaves as you pass by while your windows are open, and it will release a vapour of oil into the air.

Basil is also an inexpensive option. You can buy a pot for £1.50 in Sainsbury’s and other supermarkets.

2. Lavender

Even dead and dried flowers are valuable. You can create lavender bags from the dried flowers and pop them in your wardrobe.

Hang a couple of bunches around the home and put some sprigs in your sock drawer. They can help to keep clothes moths at bay as well as other bugs.

3. Lemon balm

Bring some into your home and rustle the leaves for maximum effect. It smells great to humans but not to flies and mosquitoes.

4. Mint

Despite its common, green appearance, mint plants will instantly repel any flies that approach them with their sweet smell and taste, and they thrive indoors if properly watered.
