Everyone has to do laundry, so the cost of using a machine can add up, especially for large families with washing machines that are always in use. While there are ways to cut costs, such as using the machine only at certain times of day, an expert has revealed common mistakes to avoid.

According to EDF Energy, the average monthly energy bill for a UK household ranges from £57 to £110, depending on the size of the household. Miele kitchen appliance expert Ryan Adams, director of Ati Harrogate, has identified four mistakes that could be increasing your energy bill.

One of these is not using the spin cycle and not checking pockets before doing laundry, reports the Express.

1. Not using the spin cycle

“Running a second spin cycle in the washing machine to remove excess water and untangling items before drying helps the clothes move freely in the drum, reducing strain on the dryer,” explained Ryan.

“Including a thorough spin cycle before tumble drying can help households potentially save between £29 to £72 annually.”

2. Washing towels and bed linen together

The added water weight often exceeds the recommended load capacity, potentially damaging the drum shaft and bearings.

The expert noted: “Additionally, these items tend to form a single heavy ball during the cycle, which can bounce around and harm the machine’s internal parts.”

3. Not checking pockets

These items can bang around inside the drum, leading to expensive repairs. A quick check is recommended to save machines and prevent unnecessary costs.

4. Not emptying the lint trap

Ryan highlighted the importance of maintaining your dryer, stating: “A clogged trap reduces airflow, forcing the dryer to work harder, which not only wastes energy but also risks overheating the appliance.”

He emphasised the safety benefits of routine maintenance, adding: “Regularly cleaning the lint trap before each drying cycle makes it more efficient and safer, preventing fire hazards.”

Additionally, he pointed out that it’s crucial to keep the washing machine clean as well to avoid mould and sludge accumulation.
