An American woman living in the UK has left Brits in stitches with her impression of the men she met in a local pub, with some saying she should ‘have the right to sue’
This American woman’s impression of a British lad has got people rolling with laughter.
Let’s face it, we’ve got some weird mannerisms as a nation. And while we don’t think too much of them on a day-to-day basis, visitors from other countries can sometimes be left baffled when they see how we interact with each other in certain situations.
One American woman who currently lives in London was left scratching her head when she visited a pub and saw how the people – especially the men – greeted each other. And she took to social media to recall what she’d seen alongside a “spot on” impression that left people reeling.
The woman, known only as K on TikTok, shared a video that was titled “English lads, are you okay?”, and explained how she was in a pub when a group of men arrived to a chorus of: “Wheey!”
The sound will be a common one to most of us, as it’s a typical cheer mostly heard when someone does something embarrassing – such as falling over or dropping a glass. But it can also be used as an enthusiastic greeting when you’re in a group of mates and another friend shows up to join the party.
In her video, K asked: “Can someone please tell me why all English guys are like, ‘Wheey’? I was in a pub last night and this big group of lads comes in and they just come in and are [immediately] like ‘Whheeyy!’. What is that? Nothing had happened. They just came into the pub like that.”
Commenters on the post were left in stitches at how accurate her impression was. Several joked that she’d stumbled upon an “official language” of British people, while other American tourists said they feel as though they “have the right to sue” after realising the Hollywood stereotype of British men isn’t always accurate.
One person said: “That’s an official language you heard – Wetherspoonian,” while another posted: “They learn those sounds at football matches and just repeat them at each other for the rest of their lives.”
And another tourist lamented: “Imagine me moving to the UK expecting Mr Darcy and getting off the train in Norfolk to this noise. I think I have the right to sue … I just don’t know who.”
