Here’s everything you need to know about when supermarkets are open and closed on the August bank holiday including Tesco, Aldi, Asda Sainsbury’s Morrisons and Lidl
The final bank holiday of the summer is here – so when will supermarkets be open over the weekend?
With every bank holiday, it’s handy to be aware of any changes to store opening times as hours can often change slightly. Here we explain everything you need to know about when the major UK supermarkets will be open this weekend.
Aldi
Aldi will open as normal on Saturday, and Sunday and the only day where opening hours will change is on the bank holiday Monday itself. Normal hours in England and Wales see stores open from 8am until 10pm – although some Aldi sites do open a tad earlier at 7am. On Sunday Aldi stores will be open for only six hours from 10am until 4pm, or 11am until 5pm.
On Monday, August 26, Aldi stores across England and Wales will open at 8am and close at 8pm. Aldi stores in Scotland will be opening until 10pm as usual. This is because Scotland celebrated its summer bank holiday earlier this month on August 5.
Tesco
On Saturday, the majority of larger Tesco stores open at either 6am or 7am, and close as late as midnight. On Sunday, most larger stores are open from 10am or 11am, until 4pm or 5pm.
On the bank holiday Monday, the majority of Tesco larger stores will be open from 8am to 6pm in England and Wales, or from 8am and 8pm in Scotland. Tesco Express stores are typically open at 6am and close at 11pm or midnight from Monday through to Sunday. These hours will remain in place on the bank holiday Monday at most stores.
Asda
On Saturday, and Sunday Asda stores will be operating under their normal hours. On Saturday, most Asda stores usually open between 6am or 7am and close at between 10pm and midnight. On Sunday, stores only open for six hours from either 10am or 11am to between 4pm and 5pm.
On the bank holiday Monday, a lot of Asda stores will be opening an hour earlier or an hour later. The majority of larger Asda stores will be opening later between 7am and 8am and closing between 10pm and 11pm. However, this is not widespread as some Asda stores will be opening as early as 6am. Asda Express stores will be operating under their normal hours on the bank holiday Monday – these also include stores that are open 24 hours.
Morrisons
Morrisons will open at either 6am or 7am and close between 10pm and midnight on Saturday. This includes Morrisons Daily stores. Some of these stores are 24 hours, so will be open from midnight to midnight. On Sundays, larger Morrisons stores in England and Wales open at either 10am and 11am and close between 4pm and 5pm. Morrisons Daily stores will open from 7am until 10pm.
On the bank holiday itself, larger Morrisons stores will be open between 7am and 8am and close at 8pm. Although some stores may open later until 10pm. All Morrisons stores in Scotland will also remain open and trading under their normal trading hours all weekend.
Sainsbury’s
Opening hours will remain the same on Saturday and Sunday with Sainsbury’s superstores opening between 6am and 7am and close between 10pm and 11pm on Saturday. On Sunday, store will open from either 10am to 4pm or 11am to 5pm.
On the bank holiday Monday, Sainsbury’s larger stores will open from 8am until 8pm while its convenience stores will be open from 7am until either 10pm or 11pm over the entire weekend. Scottish stores will be open as normal.
Lidl
Again, Lidl’s stores will be open as normal on Saturday, from 7am until 10pm, and on Sunday it’ll be open from either 10am until 4pm or 11am until 5pm. On August 26, stores in England and Wales and outside the M25 are open from 8am to 8pm. Inside the M25, branches are open between 8am and 10pm. Although these opening times can vary depending on where your local store is based, for example, if it’s in a shopping centre then it could close earlier. Stores in Scotland are open as normal on August 26.
Waitrose
Opening hours at Waitrose vary considerably from store to store. Some stores open as early as 7am whilst others don’t open until 9am. This is the same with its closing hours with some shutting shop for the day as early as 5pm and others as late as 10pm. The bank holiday hours do show that some Waitrose stores will be opening under their usual hours and closing an hour or two earlier. So you should definitely check the opening times of your local using the supermarket’s online store locator here.
M&S
On the bank holiday, it appears stores will be opening under their normal hours but closing an hour or two earlier depending on where it is. The majority of M&S stores will open between 8am and 9am today and close between 6pm and 9pm.
