WhatsApp is bringing an improved way to chat on video calls with users now able to change the background to something more fun and more dramatic.
Your WhatsApp video calls are about to get a lot more exciting. The Meta-owned platform has just confirmed that it’s about to launch a new free upgrade that will let you change the background when chatting to friends and family. That’s something users of services such as Google Meet have been able to do for a while but this is the first time it’s come to WhatsApp.
Options at launch include a simple blur effect along with Living room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh. There are also some more dramatic backdrops such as Beach, Sunset, Celebration and Forest.
And that’s not all. WhatsApp is also bringing filters to its video calls as well allowing you to boost your face with options like Warm, Cool, Black & White, Light leak, Dreamy, Prism light, Fisheye, Vintage TV, Frosted glass and Duo tone.
“Conversations on WhatsApp should always feel fun and expressive and today, we’re rolling out filters and backgrounds to make your video calls even more engaging. With these new effects, you can now change your background or add a filter during a video call for a more personal touch,” WhatsApp explained.
“Filters are designed to help you create a more playful atmosphere, whether that’s adding a splash of color or creating a more artistic feel for your video. With backgrounds, you can keep your surroundings private and transport yourself to a cozy coffee shop or comfortable living room for a more clean and polished look.”
To access these during a 1:1 or group video call, you’ll simply need to select the effects icons on top right of the screen to see the selection of filters and backgrounds and choose the one that suits your mood.
There’s no word on an exact launch date but WhatsApp has said to expect the changes to be available for everyone in the coming weeks.
