Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has commented on speculation linking him with the German national team, just months after he hinted he had no plans to return to the dugout
Jurgen Klopp has again distanced himself from the German national team job, tipping Julian Nagelsmann to stay in the role for “much, much longer” than his current contract.
Klopp, 57, announced back in January that he would leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and bid an emotional farewell to Anfield in May.
The former Borussia Dortmund chief had long maintained he would take a sabbatical after leaving the Reds but that hasn’t prevented speculation over his next role – particularly the Germany job, which he has been persistently linked with.
Nagelsmann has a contract which runs until the 2026 World Cup but DFB sports director Rudi Voller recently outlined that Klopp would be the perfect successor.
However, the man himself has played down links to the role before tipping Nagelsmann – formerly of Bayern Munich and Red Bull Leipzig – to continue beyond the upcoming tournament, which will be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“Everyone hopes that Julian Nagelsmann will do this for much, much longer than 2026,” Klopp said in Berlin, where he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The former Anfield favourite added: “I would be reluctant to talk about football today because there is nothing to say. Rudi Voller is a very nice guy. He was put in the situation where he had to talk about it.”

Klopp, who was succeeded by Dutchman Arne Slot at Anfield, has kept a low profile since leaving Liverpool, where he was in charge for just shy of nine years.
He sparked speculation that he may retire from management for good earlier this year when he was asked about a return to the dugout, though he stopped short of confirming it outright.
He said: “If you ask me, ‘Will you ever work as a manager again?’ I would say now no. But I don’t know obviously how that will feel because I never had the situation.
“But all the rest, will I ever work again? Of course, I know myself, I cannot just sit around. I will find something else maybe to do. But I will not manage a club or a country at least for a year, that’s not possible, I cannot do that and I don’t want to. That’s all.”
