Washing your hair can be an arduous task, but one holistic health lover insists you should ditch shampoos and conditioners; she hasn’t washed her hair in over a year and still has soft locks
A woman has revealed why she hasn’t washed her hair in over a year and says she swears by unusual ingredients to make her locks super soft.
With so many hair care tips shared on social media and shops filled with a range of different products, it is hard to know which to use. One holistic health coach insists you should start ditching your regular shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products if you want hydrated, soft hair.
Filmmaker and writer Georgia Peck is passionate about holistic health and uses natural products on her long locks. It’s been over a year since she last used regular shampoo to wash her hair – and instead she uses ingredients you would use for cooking.
Georgia said: “I haven’t washed my hair in over a year, using any shampoo or any conditioners or any hair care products – and as you can see my hair is pretty thick, it’s pretty wavy, and this is to prove to you that you don’t need to buy any shampoos or conditioners or hair care products.”
Georgia, who often shared her advice on health and wellbeing via her TikTok page @georgia_peckk, explained: “Many mainstream hair care products are completely filled with chemicals that disrupt our organs , our hormones, and they’re just not good for us.”
“Even if it says it’s natural and organic and biodegradable, it is usually not good for us,” she added.
She said that a number of mainstream products strip our scalps of natural oils and it can create more issues with oiliness, dandruff and flakiness. “Our ancestors wouldn’t have had access to these type of chemicals so we shouldn’t be using them either,” Georgia added.
To ensure her hair stays health and scalp stays cleansed but isn’t stripped of its natural oils, she uses a herbal hair rinse once a week. It includes rosemary, lavender, oregano, apple cider vinegar, nettle. “If I’m feeling particularly feral I will also add a raw egg, and also some olive oil,” she said.
“After I rinsed my hair with some warm water and apple cider vinegar I will then add the hair rinse and I will usually leave this in for five to 10 minutes and I will just lightly rinse this out.”
She also believes that eating and drinking right helps with the overall health of your scalp and hair. She added: “Just like our body needs this nourishment, our hair can also really benefit from things like herbal rinses including the proteins from raw egg.”
Georgia added that she often gets asked if her hair gets greasy. She explained: “The fact is that if you have been using shampoo over and over again for your whole life, your hair is going to be in this sort of cycle where you strip the oils, and then more oil is produced and then you need to wash it again. So you need to break this cycle.” She says you can break the cycle in six weeks.
A number of people commented on her video as one said: “Water is enough. Been shampoo free for a few years now.”
Agreeing with Georgia, one other said: “Exactly! We start using shampoo only 100 years [ago] … absolutely unnecessary it’s just about money.” Another commented: “Totally did this for years with baking soda wash and vinegar condition. It’s very good.”
“If I left my hair for a week, my hair would stink and head would itch,” pointed out another. “My scalp would grow a new ecosystem,” joked another commenter.
Georgia said she also no longer gets skin breakouts after suffering with acne for years. She said: “A skin problem is usually a gut problem. As the skin mirrors the gut. I used to use 10+ products and use just grass fed organic beef tallow moisturiser – all natural.”
