Many Brits could be unknowingly teetering on the brink of serious health issues, as a leading expert warns that if left untreated, a common disease could lead to life-changing complications
Superdrug’s Pharmacy superintendent Niamh McMillan is urging the public to be vigilant for a widespread illness this winter, particularly those who have previously had chickenpox and are over 50 years old. She emphasised that these individuals are at high risk of developing shingles.
The virus that causes chickenpox remains “dormant” in your system for many years and can reactivate as shingles, leading to “serious long-lasting complications” if not treated promptly. McMillan warned that people over 50, those with compromised immune systems, or under extreme stress are especially susceptible to a shingles outbreak.
She pointed out that one in three adults carry the dormant virus: “Shingles typically emerges when the body’s immune defences are weakened, such as during periods of stress or illness. It’s crucial to treat shingles early to avoid complications like persistent nerve pain or eye problems.” The pharmacist highlighted three warning signs that everyone should familiarise themselves with. Shingles can often start with a tingling or burning sensation, something Niamh highlighted isn’t initially obvious.
She detailed: “The first sign of shingles is often a tingling or burning sensation, usually in a localised area of the body. This discomfort can persist for days before any visible symptoms appear.” A rash that starts small and then spreads into painful fluid-filled blisters on the body or face follows.
Niamh cautioned: “These blisters can pop suddenly, so it’s important not to scratch or pop them. They can cause severe discomfort, particularly for older adults.” Pain is common throughout the condition and can remain even after recovery.
Niamh continued: “Postherpetic neuralgia, which is long-term nerve pain that can last months or even years after the rash heals. It can feel like a burning, throbbing, or sharp stabbing sensation, and even gentle touches to the area can trigger extreme pain.” Untreated shingles or postherpetic neuralgia can escalate into debilitating pain, thus timely treatment of shingles is crucial to reduce long-term impacts.
