The BBC are planning to change things up on Match of the Day once Gary Lineker exits at the end of the season and Roman Kemp is said to have been approached over a role
Roman Kemp is emerging as an unlikely candidate for a role on Match of the Day once Gary Lineker departs.
The BBC and Lineker confirmed earlier this week that the 63-year-old, who replaced Des Lynam back in 1999, will stand from from his role at the end of the season.
Speculation has been rife since the news broke over who will replace Lineker in the hotseat. And there are seemingly plans to shake the popular show up in a bid to appeal to a younger audience.
It’s now been claimed that BBC director of sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, is lining Kemp up for a ‘digital role’ as part of those plans.
A source told The Sun: “Match Of The Day is moving with the times and next season there will be more of a focus on digital highlights. Alex has been speaking with Roman about possibly coming on board and how it could work.
“Roman has a massive following online and is hugely popular with a younger audience thanks to his years hosting the Breakfast Show on Capital FM. He is also a huge Arsenal fan and knows what he is talking about when it comes to football.
“It is very much in the early stages but Match Of The Day is coming into a new digital age and Alex would love to have Roman front and centre.”
While it remains unclear what Kemp’s role would involve should talks come to fruition, Kemp has broadcasting experience and currently fronts The One Show alongside Alex Jones.
The BBC recently struck a new highlights deal with the Premier League which enables them to show match action before their traditional 10.30pm time-slot on Saturday nights. The corporation are expected to ‘put a renewed focus’ on their digital output in light of said agreement.
