Callum Ryan, 23, from Milton Keynes, visited the bakery inside The Berkley Hotel in Knightsbridge to try the expensive cookie – but he was left disappointed
A man sampled Britain’s priciest cookie and was deeply unimpressed.
Callum Ryan, 23, ventured into the bakery at The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge to sample their renowned cookies, crafted by thrice-crowned world’s best pastry chef, French maestro Cedric Goulet. Opting for a chocolate chip delight, Callum shelled out £26.45 including service, but was left underwhelmed, likening the taste to “sand”.
The Milton Keynes man said: “I was trying to find the most expensive cookie. The most expensive cookie was £27 and they even add a 15 per cent service charge. It was gritty and tasted like it had sand in it and it did not live up to the hype. I wouldn’t say it’s any better than the cookies I get from Tesco.”
On November 12, 2024, Callum visited the hotel, and was unable to fault its ambiance. While the priciest offering was a £27 hazelnut cookie, he chose the slightly cheaper chocolate chip version at £23, which totalled £26.45 after service. He praised the setting, saying: “The atmosphere was beautiful and was the perfect setting for a sweet treat.”
He enjoyed the presentation and ambiance, yet felt the cookie didn’t justify its cost, branding it “raw” and ultimately departing with it half-eaten in a takeaway bag. He expressed his willingness to return, aiming to sample a different treat next time. He shared, “I’d maybe go back for a pastry or a coffee. The atmosphere was really nice. The bakery is in a five-star hotel in the middle of Knightsbridge so it was really nice.”
Last month the Mirror’s Jessica Gibb decided to venture to a similar patch of London to try the most expensive Full English available in the UK.
“I decided to try somewhere considerably more fancy than my local caff for a special day out in London. Getting my husband on board was admittedly going to be a challenge. Sending him the menu for the Claridge’s Restaurant, he replied: ‘FORTY-FIVE POUNDS FOR A BREAKFAST?!’,” she wrote.
“Determined to see what all the fuss was about at the 5* hotel in Mayfair, I proceeded to book us in for a slap-up Saturday morning feast. We’d spend up to £100 for a fancy dinner out for a special occasion, so why not splash the cash for the most important meal of the day?”
While Jess forked out far more for the meal than Callum did for his cookie, she was far happier with what she ended up with than he was.
“The breakfast alone is not worth £45, but the visit to one of the most elegant hotels in London certainly is. Rooms at the iconic hotel in the heart of Mayfair cost from £840 a night, so you can experience a couple of hours of true 5* luxury for a snip of the price,” she wrote.
