Molly Mae has launched own fashion brand Maebe but in a new interview she reveals what really happened with PLT founder Umar Kamini after she stepped down as Creative Director
It was summer 2019 when Molly Mae Hague first appeared on our TV screens as a Love Island contestant – five years on and Molly’s career is going from strength to strength but she’s had a turbulent year.
After her success on the show, Molly Mae worked with Pretty Little Thing for year and her and the fast fashion brand’s founder Umar Kamini were once close friends. But as their friendship hit turbulent times and she wasn’t invited to his wedding earlier this year, we take a look at what happened.
After making a name for herself on Love Island as a runner up alongside ex partner Tommy Fury in 2019, brands like PLT were eager to sign up Molly Mae, 25. Two years after she left the show, she was named the label’s Creative Director earning a reported £5m annual salary. However, after Molly-Mae left the company last June, her relationship with its founder has proved rocky with fans noticing she wasn’t invited to his star-studded wedding in May.
Now the influencer has said that although she wouldn’t work with PLT again she doesn’t regret working for them in the past. “It’s probably not a decision that I would make now,” she told Vogue. “I don’t particularly wear fast fashion now, but that’s not to say that I don’t understand why girls do. I understand that not everyone can afford to shop brands that use all recycled materials.”
Speaking on her YouTube channel when she quit the role, Molly said. “I will forever have the most insane relationship with PLT… they are literally my family,” she said. “I am still working with them and doing collections and edits, but I have actually decided to step down as my creative director role.
“Myself and PLT have decided collectively that as much as the creative director role was incredible and I have literally loved being the creative director of PLT more than anything it was such an amazing chapter for me it has naturally come to an end.”
But when PLT founder Umar Kamani wed his bride Nadia in a huge four-day extravaganza in the South of France earlier this year, fans noticed she wasn’t on the star-studded guest list with a roll call including supermodel Naomi Campbell and Rio and Kate Ferdinand.
Yet, despite the rumours of a fallout Molly Mae says there was no bad blood between them. She simply stepped down from her role to spend more time with Bambi, her one-year-old daughter who she shares with ex Tommy Fury.
It’s been a tumultuous year for the influencer who split from her ex Tommy earlier this year. However, she is looking forward to the future and has just launched her own clothing line, Maebe which she hopes will be popular with her millions of followers despite the fact it has been branded expensive yet uses mixed materials.
