Gardening experts have revealed the one thing that everyone should be doing in their garden to protect their plants from frost and it’s super cheap and easy to do
Gardeners’ World magazine has shared the one thing that every gardener needs to do right now to protect their plants from frost.
According to the gardening experts, it’s essential to understand how to protect plants from frost as frost can cause serious damage to certain plants. Gardeners World explains that it’s a smart idea to ‘check the weather forecasts for frost alerts’ and to take preventative steps to protect flowers and plants.
Gardening experts recommend making sure that plants are properly insulated to protect them from frost. The best way to do that, according to Gardeners’ World, is to ‘use a cloche’ or fleece to protect seedlings and tender plants. They explained that providing plants with protection from the frost using a cloche can ‘make all the difference to their survival’.
Alternatively, another option is to bring plants inside. They explain that: “A frost-free greenhouse is invaluable for a wide range of plants.” To ensure it’s properly insulated, they recommend using bubble wrap to help ‘retain heat’. If you don’t have a greenhouse, a conservatory or a porch can also work just as well.
Another option for larger plants that can’t be moved is to create ‘protective tents’ to keep them warm. Gardeners’ World explains that you can: “Push bamboo canes into the ground around the plant to be protected, and cover with horticultural fleece or bubble wrap to create a protective tent.” To secure the tent to the bamboo, they recommend tying it with string.
For potted plants, the experts recommend wrapping the pot with bubblewrap and then putting a piece of ‘horticultural fleece’ over the top of it, before securing it with string. This should help to ensure that your potted plants that may be prone to frost damage, can be kept safe in the cooler winter temperatures.
