A 25-year-old British man has died after he lost consciousness while diving in Greece.
The man was found in the sea in Vouliagmeni, south of Athens, Greece, where he had been diving with instructors from a private company, the Coast Guard said.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the man’s death, inlucing a 46-year-old diving instructor and his 37-year-old assistant for allegedly breaching article 302 of the Criminal Code.
An EKAV ambulance rushed the young Brit to the nearest hospital on Saturday afternoon where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy is set to take place at Greece’s Forensic and Toxicology Laboratory of the School of Medicine. The Port Authority, who is conducting the preliminary investigation, also confiscated diving equipment from the two who were arrested.
The news comes just days after a British lawyer died from drinking poisoned alcohol at a backpacker’s hostel in Laos.
Simone White, 28, is one of six people to have died after being poisoned at the hostel, while another 11 foreign nationals remain in hospital in a serious condition. Australian teen Holly Bowles died on Friday after falling ill while holidaying with her best pal Bianca Jones, who died just a day prior.
Anne-Sofie Orkild Coyman, 20, and Freja Vennervald Sorensen, 21, were named as the two Danish nationals who also died in connection with the poisonings. On Thursday, the US State Department confirmed the death of a 56-year-old male US citizen in Vang Vieng.
The government of Laos said it was investigating the suspected methanol poisoning and promised to prosecute those responsible.
In a statement to the press, the Laotian authorities said they were “profoundly saddened” by the deaths of the travellers and extended their deepest sympathies to the bereaved families. The statement confirmed investigations would be carried out “to find causes of the incident” and vowed to “bring the perpetrators to justice”.
On Friday, Simone White’s heartbroken said they are “devastated by the loss of our beautiful, kind and loving daughter”.
They added: “Simone was one of a kind and had the most wonderful energy and spark for life. She was a soul who gave so much to so many and was loved by her family, friends and colleagues. Simone has been taken from us too soon, she will be sorely missed by her brother, grandmother and entire family. Our hearts go out to all other families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.”
