A woman has shared a ‘gross’ way to clean wooden spoons, and it’s left people horrified – but some are joking that it’s a waste of flavour. Here’s how it is done
Many people are oblivious to the fact that their wooden spoons require a thorough clean, often just tossing them in the dishwasher along with cutlery and thinking nothing more of it.
However, due to the porous nature of wood, food and dirt can penetrate the surface, making the utensil unhygienic. Luckily, a cleaning whizz has revealed a method to restore your wooden spoons to their former glory – but brace yourself for the yuck factor.
Lulaboo Jenkins, who shares her tips on TikTok under the handle @lulabookjenkins, reacted to a video from @kimmyskreations, which demonstrated her placing her wooden spoons into a pot of boiling water.
As the filth began to rise to the top, she can be heard exclaiming “ewww”. The result was so shocking that Lulaboo had to test the method herself, confessing that she’d never considered cleaning them this way before.
She captioned the video: “Holy c*** I should have done this sooner! Lord help me this was gross.” “I’ve had these for like, years”, she confessed. “And now I’m very very scared.”
She showed some of her oldest spoons to the camera, admitting she was “scared for what comes out.” After removing the spoons from the boiling water, she was appalled to find she couldn’t even see the bottom of the pan.
Commenters were equally disgusted by the accumulation of grime, though some found humour in the situation. “Now the flavours are gone”, one quipped.
One commenter chimed in: “That’s why your food tastes so good. Now you’ve boiled out all the flavourings”, followed by a crying laughter face. Another user joked: “I hope you didn’t let those years of seasonings go to waste! Cook some ramen in it!”
Meanwhile, a cleaning expert shared their own tip, saying: “I boil mine once a year with vinegar, then oil them down with mineral oil, mine have never splintered or warped.”
