A bargain holiday expert has shared her top tips on social media and insists that the best Christmas market to visit is not in the UK – but it’s only a short flight away
There’s nothing like smelling chestnuts roasting, wrapping your hands around a warm hot chocolate or mulled wine, and perusing various stalls at Christmas markets.
Christmas markets are a seasonal sensation, drawing crowds eager to indulge in festive celebrations from November into the new year all around the world. These markets, a staple in various countries, offer a magical opportunity to make memories with loved ones amid a wonderland of scrumptious treats, thrilling fairground rides, and captivating entertainment.
In the UK, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Manchester host some of the most sought-after markets, not forgetting London’s iconic Winter Wonderland. However, it’s no secret that the experience can take a toll on your wallet.
Chelsea, a British bargain hunter with a knack for frugal festivities, champions Cologne’s Christmas markets as the best of them all. Not only does it boast an array of activities, but it also promises more bang for your buck compared to its British counterparts.
The savvy saver, who dishes out budget travel advice on social media, recently took to TikTok to share her insights: “If you haven’t booked a European Christmas market yet this year here’s why I think you should opt for Cologne. So last year I visited seven European Christmas markets and Cologne my absolute favourite.”
Cologne Tourism confirms the city’s festive allure, announcing: “This year the Christmas markets in Cologne opened their gates around November 18, and are welcoming visitors with delicacies such as mulled wine and waffles. You can explore the many markets in the course of a mulled-wine tour through the cathedral city.”
Chelsea, the savvy traveller behind Cheap Holiday Expert, has shared her enchanting experience at Cologne’s Christmas markets on her website. She gushed: “I loved Heinzels Wintermärchen Christmas Market in Cologne’s old town, spread over the Alter Markt and Heumarkt squares.
“This is a traditional market, centred around the folk legend of household spirits, the Heinzelmännchen. As well as stalls selling incredible hand-made gifts, there are food stands, live music, artist performances and an ice rink too.”
She also praised the main attraction, saying: “The main market is Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market, where you’ll find stalls laden with handmade treasures, foodie delights and Christmassy drinks. Of course there’s also a giant Christmas tree at the centre of the action, and a stage with lots of performances.”
Chelsea noted the affordability of the festive fare, enjoying a hot dog for just £3.85, a steal compared to London’s Winter Wonderland’s £8 or Nottingham’s £7.50 offering. Even Birmingham’s price tag of £6.50 couldn’t compete.
Taking to TikTok, she continued her praise: “As for the drink, the mulled wine was so good and also a great place that is so boozy.” She didn’t miss out on mentioning the adorable mugs used for serving drinks, describing them as “so cute”.
The social media star couldn’t stop raving about Cologne’s shopping scene, saying: “Oh and how can I forget the shopping. I’ve seen a lot of tat during my Christmas market crawl last year. These were definitely one of the best when it came to a good variety of stalls which had items that actually looked like they were good quality.”
She recommended booking accommodation and travel as early as possible for anyone interested in going. Her viral video drew plenty of attention, with comments pouring in.
One user exclaimed: “I was literally saying how amazing Cologne Christmas market is. We did this last year via train from London and it was so much fun! ” Another chimed in: “I watched your last year video comparing markets and actually flying to Cologne this weekend! ” Amid the praise, someone else playfully remarked: “Oh this is so temping – purely for those huge cinnamon rolls to be honest.”
