A cleaning expert has shared her go-to hack to get rid of mould and mildew from shower grout without scrubbing – and it only requires two everyday bathroom products
A cleaning whizz has revealed her top tip for banishing mould and mildew from shower grout without the need for scrubbing. The TikTok sensation, known as @sisterpledgecleans, posted a video demonstrating her clever method to get her shower gleaming.
In the Tiktok video, she sprays Astonish’s Mould & Mildew Remover onto the grout and then applies toilet paper over it. “Use this hack to remove mould and mildew from your grouting. Stick toilet roll to the grouting and saturate with product to make it stick. Leave it overnight then remove,” the cleaning guru explains.
The result is a dramatic reduction in mould and mildew, with about 90% less visible after the treatment. Viewers of her video were quick to express their approval, with one saying: “Love this, thank you.”
Another remarked: “I used Domestos last night and left it with tissue all night, it worked. I would say 80% it works.” A third chimed in: “I used Domestos bleach and it worked.”
This hack seems to be gaining traction among the online community, as another homeowner shared their success with the technique on Reddit. They posted a photo of their mouldy grout and asked DIYUK: “Why does this seem to happen at every flat we’ve lived in and how can we get rid of/prevent it permanently?”.
One frustrated homeowner asked for help tackling the issue, saying: “We’ve tried mould remover but it’s on the underside of the seal annoyingly. We always use a squeegee to wipe away water after showering and always air out the bathroom after too (windows wide open till condensation is gone). We also run a dehumidifier regularly. Presumably, we’ll need to get it resealed? But even if we do, how can we prevent it from reoccurring? Thanks in advance for any help.”
One user suggested a solution, saying: “The best solution I’ve found is to get some wet toilet paper, press it up to the affected area and soak it in bleach. Leave it for 24 hours and check it. Won’t be perfect and may need a few rounds but it’s either that or replace the silicone.”
Another user agreed, saying: “This 100% had great results in our bathroom.” A third user shared their experience, saying: “This might be worth a try before you replace it. I did this in my flat and it killed off all the mould and looked brand new. Just repeated the process about a year later when it started getting bad again. If you have more willpower than I, clean it with a bleach based product more often to prevent future issues.”
