A new study has found that one Scottish Highlands village is “guaranteed” a white Christmas thanks to the number of snowy days it sees every year.
According to research by travel gurus, one quaint village in the Scottish Highlands is “guaranteed” a white Christmas.
There’s nothing quite like watching the snowfall on Christmas Day, all cosy and warm indoors with no place to be. Recent ‘snow maps’ suggest that certain parts of Scotland, including Fort William and Inverness, stand a good chance of experiencing a white Christmas.
However, a new study released by StressFreeCarRental.com reveals that if you’re after “guaranteed” snow this festive season, Tomintoul is your best bet. This charming Moray village made it onto a list of six ‘fairytale’ Christmas destinations worldwide.
While we can’t predict with certainty whether snow will fall, Tomintoul does see an average of about 61 days of snow each year due to its position as the highest village in the Highlands. So, some snowfall seems a safe bet this winter, according to the Scottish Daily Express.
The experts included Tomintoul on their list because of its “abundance of sporting and outdoor activities like skiing, snowboarding and beautiful walking trails”, not to mention its “spectacular landscapes and rugged mountains”. Nestled near the River Avon within the Cairngorms National Park, this delightful village is surrounded by some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery.
Tomintoul, a real-life winter wonderland nestled in Scotland, is making waves this Yuletide season. Less than an hour from the now-open-for-the-season Cairngorm Mountain resort, and snuggled close to the iconic Whisky Trail through Speyside, this village ticks all the boxes for a Christmas getaway.
Nearby, you can even catch sight of the legendary Cairngorm reindeer herd.
Not your average Scottish hamlet, Tomintoul’s grid pattern streets are a navigational breeze – though it’s quaint enough that getting lost isn’t on the cards. Star gazers are in for a treat too, with the village boasting prime access to a Dark Sky site, where the ethereal Northern Lights may grace the skies.
The wonders don’t stop at Tomintoul the Finnish locale of Inari within the Arctic Circle, Austria’s Alpine village of Hallstat, Mittenwald in Germany, Dolomites’ Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy, and the Polish village Karpacz, also enjoy shout outs in the list of idyllic winter destinations.
John Charnock, CEO of StressFreeCarRental.com, shared his thoughts: “It is a dream for many to experience a white Christmas, and there are some locations even more beautiful once winter arrives and festivities begin.”
He adds, evoking festive imagery, “With our favourite Christmas movies and children’s festive tales set in snowy scenes, most hope to spend the big day in a snow-blanketed location.”
