A ‘super gran’ has impressed people online and her grandchildren after converting an old garden shed into a magical, Christmas grotto. She managed to do it on a budget and even got Santa to visit
With Christmas just around the corner, Brits are busy decking out their homes to embrace the festive spirit – and one grandma has gone above and beyond to give her grandchildren a magical experience.
The woman dubbed “super gran” online surprised the kids with their very own Christmas grotto in her back garden. She managed to convert an old, dingy garden shed into an impressive space that looks like it’s straight out of Lapland.
She cleared out the shed before adding twinkling lights, an arm chair, candles, Christmas ornaments, a small Christmas tree, and more. Plus the little ones were surprised with a visit from Santa and presents to open before the big day.
Her daughter April Hamilton, who shared a video of the grotto on TikTok recently, said: “I think she just wanted to do something nice for her grandkids. She’s always taken great pride in her Christmas tree, and I have fond memories of decorating it together with a Christmas movie in the background.
“She put the same effort into decorating the shed, which she wanted to feel like Santa’s grotto, magical yet cosy.”
April, who lives in Paisley, Scotland, shared: “I know it took her a good wee while to set it up! One meaningful touch is that she included my late grandpa’s old train set which he would always have out at Christmas.”
Even Santa came to visit the children. April added: “My daughter and niece, who were both three last year, were absolutely thrilled when they saw it. There was plenty of squealing and excitement. It was exactly the kind of reaction my mum was hoping for, and it made all her work worthwhile.”
The shed transformation was conducted on a budget and the grandma mainly used a lot of old Christmas decorations she had accumulated over the years. She also borrowed some decorations from loved ones.
April added: “I’m hoping that it will now become an annual celebration – who knows how big it could become? Maybe next year she’ll have a snow machine! Is a real reindeer too far?”
How to create your own Christmas grotto at home
For anyone feeling inspired by April’s story, garden shed expert at Tiger, Sam Jenkinson shared his advice for converting your shed into a Christmas grotto.
Creating a festive wonderland in your garden building is a wonderfully unique way to celebrate the season and bring a touch of magic to your home.
The expert says you should begin by clearing out your shed to create a blank canvas. Sam said: “Move any tools, gardening gear, or bulky furniture into storage to maximise space. Sweep the floor and consider adding a temporary floor covering, such as a festive rug or faux snow blankets, to create a cosy atmosphere.
“Don’t forget to weatherproof your shed by sealing any draughts or adding a heater to keep everyone snug.”
He also suggests making the area cosy and magical with fairy lights, LED candles, and icicle lights to “cast a soft, enchanting glow”. String them along walls, drape them over beams, and even weave them into wreaths or garlands.
To decorate, adorn the walls with tinsel, wreaths, and baubles. You could also add garland around the doorframe will set the tone from the moment guests arrive, and adding props like Santa’s sack or a sleigh can take your theme to the next level. Add in a cosy seating area with chairs or benches, blankets and cushions.
Sam also suggested: “Why not include a personalised touch, like a ‘Santa’s Workshop’ sign, or even bring in a guest dressed as Santa? Music is another way to elevate the atmosphere, play classic carols or festive tunes to set the mood.
“For children, incorporate an activity like decorating cookies or writing letters to Santa to make it unforgettable.”
