At least one person has been killed and dozens left injured after a car drove into people at a busy Christmas market in Germany.
The horror incident unfolded on Friday evening at the market in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, with 60-80 people currently estimated to be injured. Regional government spokesperson Matthias Schuppe and city spokesperson Michael Reif said they suspected the attack was deliberate, although it is not yet known if it was terror related.
Local reports said the driver of the car has been arrested. Saxony-Anhalt governor Reiner Haseloff said: “This is a terrible event, particularly now in the days before Christmas.”
German chancellor Olaf Scholz said: “My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours.”
