A nut that costs less than £1 could help you on your weight loss journey and banish bad cholesterol. According to Holland & Barrett, the nut can be used in a number of dishes, including dessert.
You may have heard of the viral Dubai chocolate bar filled with pistachio cream – and as it turns out – the nut has many health benefits. The Fix Dessert Chocolatier “Can’t Get Knafeh Of It” bar gained millions of views online and although only available in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the gooey bars got everyone drooling and re-creating them at home.
Available to buy for as little as 89p in ASDA, pistachios are part of the cashew family and “are bursting with vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B61, which helps carry oxygen around the body”. The nutritional information is based on a one ounce serving – or 28g – which is around 49 kernels.
There are seven benefits of pistachios according to the health experts with them sharing that it’s a good source of antioxidants and has the ability to help cells to rejuvenate, potentially helping slow down the aging process. The nut has 6g of protein per one ounce serving making it great if you don’t have enough protein in your diet.
They further add that due to having high protein and fibre, it “may help you feel fuller for longer. This in turn can help with weight loss as it could help with any potential cravings”. As well as weight loss, eating pistachios in small amounts can help keep your digestion moving, keeping your gut healthy. It can also lower any bad cholesterol which help improve your heart’s ability to pump blood through your body.
In addition to helping reduce the signs of ageing, it can also help reduce the risk of heart disease. It comes as a study found a “balanced diet which contained pistachio nuts reduced blood pressure and vascular resistance during acute stress when compared with a typical diet”, the health experts explain.
If you are worried about your eye health, the nuts could help too as its “antioxidants which help give pistachios their green colouring, lutein and zeaxanthin, protect the eyes from cellular damage, which may help your eyesight as you grow older”.
