Mould on walls is a common problem in UK homes in winter as the weather gets colder and people spend more time indoors – but there is a cheap and easy way to get rid of it
In homes with poor insulation, cold and damp spots can become breeding grounds for mould. However, there’s good news as natural solutions are available to combat this pesky issue, including some items you might find in your kitchen cupboard. When it comes to eradicating existing mould without ruining your paintwork, you’ll be pleased to discover that natural and harmless methods do exist.
Ryan Calvert, a product manager from Hiatt Hardware advises: “Natural cleaning solutions like vinegar or borax are the best options for removing mould from walls without damaging the paintwork, a key factor to consider for those who rent their home. The anti-fungal properties of borax make it an excellent natural cleaner,” explained Calvert. “Mix one cup of borax powder with four litres of water and brush the solution into the affected areas, taking care not to spread it elsewhere. When finished, wipe up the borax solution and let it completely dry.”
If borax isn’t readily available, white vinegar is a standout substitute due to its acidity that deters mould growth. An authority in the field affirms that vinegar can eradicate up to 82 percent of mould spores. To apply vinegar effectively, simply spray it onto the mouldy sections and let it sit for about an hour. Afterwards, cleanse the area with warm water and ensure it’s dried thoroughly.
Having a pre-mixed bottle of vinegar or borax solution in a spray bottle can be an excellent method to always have a quick and natural remedy ready for mould issues. One effective prevention strategy is to use thermal curtains and draught stoppers to help insulate your home and reduce the accumulation of moisture on surfaces.
To further protect susceptible areas, consider using a mould-resistant paint on walls, ceilings, and window sills that are prone to dampness. While it might be more expensive, this additional layer of protection helps prevent mould growth, safeguarding homeowners and their families from potential health risks associated with mould.
