The angry shopper has vowed to never shop there again
A Tesco customer has hit out at the supermarket chain after they were slapped with a £40 parking fine. The long-time customer was furious to receive the ticket after overstaying for a short time in the car park.
They said in a message to Tesco over X: “I have been a customer for 50 years, my daughter 20 years a customer. We overstayed in the car park – having had to queue for 15 minutes to get out! £40 fine.
“That’s your right to fine us – its our right to never spend another 1p with you again.” Tesco encouraged them to send them a direct message about the issue.
Tesco was also approached for comment about its parking policy. A spokesperson for the shop chain said: “We’re sorry to hear about this customer’s experience.
“Where we have parking limits in place at stores, entry and exit times are often monitored by automatic cameras. Full details of how to appeal are included in the parking charge.”
On how to appeal a parking fine, Tesco said: “If any customer has specific extenuating circumstances, our parking operator will review appeals at their discretion.” Guidance on the shop’s website explains that you can park for free at most stores but this is limited “to a maximum stay”, which varies depending on the branch.
Tesco says that if there is a maximum parking time that applies, the car park will have signs that “clearly display” the terms and conditions for using the car park. There should also be a sign at the entrance indicating the time limit.
If the car park is operated by APCOA and Horizon Parking, the parking charge notice for an overstay is £70. This is reduced to £40 if you pay the amount within 14 days.
In other cases, the parking charge notice is £100 for overstay, which will be reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
