Ty Simpson-Kane managed to survive despite being swept up by a massive wave at a Hawaiian beach and thanked his family and friends for checking on him following the wipeout
Horrifying footage shows the moment a surfer vanished into a monster wave on a dangerous beach before being spat out.
Hawaiian surfer Ty Simpson-Kane was caught on camera as he was swept up by a massive wave on Peahi beach, also known as Jaws, on the north side of Maui island. The beach is well known as a hotspot for surfers from across the world and was named by top surfers as one of the most dangerous in the world in a 2013 National Geographic article.
The clip showed the moment Ty was thrown from his surf board before he disappeared into the wave. Instagram account fishbowldiaries shared the clip, which can also be seen here, which went viral on the social media platform gaining more than 25,000 likes since it was uploaded on December 23.
Thankfully, Ty was safely brought to shore and he shared his gratitude on social media following his rescue. He described the incident as one of the most significant “wipe outs” that he had ever experienced.
As reported by the MailOnline, Fishbowldiaries asked Ty: “That was so heavy. Hope you’re ok! I’m guessing you are coz you carried on surfing. Lots more stills and clips of you.” The surfer responded: “I’m doing good. Just a lot of water in the sinus. Thank you so much, can’t wait to see them.”
Ty later added in a separate post: “There are no words that can truly describe the energy and the power that was surging. Pe’ahi was alive in all her glory and I still can’t believe I was able to get a wave paddling. Thank you to my family and my team for supporting me. I couldn’t do it without your guys love and support…to everyone that has called texted and messaged me to check in on me thank you.”
Many of those who commented on the Instagram video were stunned that Ty managed to survive. One commenter said: “How do you survive that?” Another added: “What a bomb and what a wipeout. I’m so happy you’re alive buddy.” While a third posted: “Incredible wave, glad you’re OK.”
