The Royal Mint’s 2025 annual set includes commemorative coins celebrating the Red Arrows, Queen Mum, WWII, modern railways, and the Royal Observatory – they will be available from January 2nd 2025
A handful of new coins feature designs including the Red Arrows and the Queen Mother.
The Royal Mint’s 2025 annual set, available next week, contains two 50p coins, two £2 coins and a £5 coin. The 50p coins mark the 60th anniversary of the first Red Arrows display and commemorate those who played a pivotal role in the Second World War. And two £2 new coin designs will celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and the founding of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London.
The £5 coin celebrates the Queen Mum’s life and legacy. The commemorative sets will be available in a range of precious metal and base proof finishes, from January 2 via the Royal Mint website, with prices starting from £39.50. Each of the coins will be available individually during 2025.
The Royal Mint’s Rebecca Morgan said: “From celebrating the world-renowned Red Arrows for their precision flying and intricate formations to commemorating the life and legacy of the Queen Mother, each coin has been meticulously designed and crafted to serve as a permanent reminder of these moments in British history and can be treasured for generations.”
As next year will mark 60 years since the first Red Arrows display, the commemorative 50p coin depicts the famous jets in flight, portraying their speed and agility. The reverse of the coin features three of the Red Arrows’ BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft, accompanied by the coloured trails used in the RAF team’s aerial displays.
The Stories of the Second World War 50p coin depicts the 1939-45 star, defence medal and war medal. Awarded to millions, the Mint said these medals symbolise the unique experiences of the Second World War. The 200 years of the modern railway £2 coin celebrates the journey on September 27, 1825, of George Stephenson’s steam-powered Locomotion No. 1 between Shildon, Darlington and Stockton, Co Durham.
The 350th anniversary of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, £2 coin features the Shepherd Gate Clock, the constellation Ursa Minor, the star Polaris and the Prime Meridian shown on a globe. And The Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother £5 coin marks 125 years since her birth and depicts a portrait that formed part of a design marking her 80th birthday in 1980.
From January 4, visitors to the Royal Mint Experience in South Wales will be able to strike a 2025 dated £2 coin with a rose for England, a daffodil for Wales, a thistle for Scotland or a shamrock for Northern Ireland.
