Marc Guehi impressed for England at last summer’s Euros and Crystal Palace had to fight off bids for Newcastle for the defender, who is now wanted by his old club Chelsea
Chelsea could make a shock mega move to re-sign England defender Marc Guehi.
Newcastle tried to sign the Crystal Palace centre-half last summer but could not get a deal over the line with Guehi valued at £70m. But Chelsea could now be tempted to go back for a player they sold to Palace in 2021 for £18m.
Chelsea have been left with a growing injury list and are desperate for defensive reinforcements after defender Wesley Fofana was potentially ruled out for the rest of the season. Guehi is highly-regarded at Chelsea who inserted a clause in the deal to allow them to match any offer from another club.
There is also a sell-on clause which goes up to 20 per cent but that would be complicated by the fact it would be Chelsea buying back their former player. Newcastle still remain interested while Liverpool were linked with him heavily last summer but decided not to make a move for the England international.
Guehi now has 18 months left on his contract which is running down and that could lead to his transfer value also going down and could help a deal.
Palace chairman Steve Parish was adamant that they did not need to sell last summer and also they would not drop their valuation.
But with the contract expiring and clubs interested this month, it may leave Palace with a new dilemma. However, it is still hard to imagine Palace doing a deal this month and Chelsea may also realistically have to wait until the summer.
Guehi’s reputation has grown since last summer’s Euros when his calmness, leadership and quality on the ball have made him one of the most sought-after defenders in the Premier League.
There will be no shortage of interest if he is available but Chelsea might hold an edge even though going back for a player they sold will always create a debate if they end up having to pay three times as much to get him back.
