Alexander Isak continued his sensational form as he scored for the eighth game running – setting himself apart from Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer in the process
Just call him Alexander the Gr-EIGHT.
Newcastle’s red-hot striker became only the fourth player in the Premier League era to score in eight successive games as Eddie Howe’s superchargers equalled the nine straight wins Kevin Keegan and Rafa Benitez notched up.
Isak, who netted in each half, follows in the footsteps of Jamie Vardy, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Daniel Sturridge and eclipses the seven Toon legend Alan Shearer reeled off in a black and white shirt. The Swede’s magic moment came in the 34th minute and for such a historic goal, it wasn’t one for the purists.
Picked out by Jacob Murphy, he lazily drifted inside, evaded two half-hearted challenges before scoring with a scuffed shot which took a wicked deflection off Ryan Ait-Nouri. His second on 57th minute was more of a trademark finish. Bruno Guimaraes threaded a pass through and with the minimum of fuss, Isak lashed in.
Not content with two goals, he then turned provider squaring for Anth Gordon to make it three n’ easy for the rampant Magpies 16 minutes later. Martin Dubravka brilliantly foiled Jorgen Strand Larsen but by then, Wolves were resigned to their second defeat of the Vitor Pereira era.
The visitors had always looked a threat on the break and they could have taken a shock 13th minute lead. Hwang Hee-Chan’s cross ricoched into the path of the unmarked Goncalo Guedes beyond the far post but he screwed his shot inches wide.
Free-scoring Newcastle had their moments in the opening half an hour. Murphy has been rattling up the assists lately but he forced a full-length save out of Jose Sa when he cut in from the right before unleashing a low drive.
And Murphy had the Wolves keeper at full stretch again in the 23rd minute with another right foot effort with the loose ball not falling kindly for the lurking Isak. The Swede had been quiet early on but burst into life eight minutes later when Guimaraes found him just outside the area.
His dancing feet took him inside one defender before his shot skimmed the upright. That was just the warm-up act for the man of the moment, who’s now scored 17 goals this term. But Newcastle’s lead should have lasted just eight minutes. Set up by Rodrigo Gomez, striker Strand Larsen’s first-timer hit the foot of the post.
Matheus Cunha came on for the second half and it didn’t take him long to sting the hands of Martin Dubravka with a shot on the turn. And at the other end, Santiago Bueno bravely threw himself at an Anthony Gordon effort to keep his side in it. Not for long, however. Not with goal machine Isak around as Newcastle achieved their first double over Wolves since 1906!
