A cardiologist has revealed the best time of day to drink coffee – stating that “it’s beneficial for the heart.” The expert, Doctor Aurelio Rojas, says that the popular drink can can help with weight loss and lower the risk of diabetes.
Many people believe that the drink is bad for you. However, this myth comes from studies which show that it can be harmful only in excessive consumption, stresses lavanguardia.
In fact, a recent study published by the European Heart Journal (EHJ) reveals its beneficial effects. It also looks at how to consume it without harming our bodies.
Dr Aurelio, a cardiologist, shared that “the time you drink your coffee could affect your heart.” He emphasises the importance of paying attention to studies and research rather than some social media recommendations that suggest counterproductive explanations.
What is the best time of day to drink coffee?
Research study conducted by the EHJ aimed to identify patterns in consumption times among the US population and evaluate their relationship with mortality (encompassing all causes and specific ones).
To achieve this, 40,725 adults participated in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). They were asked about the foods and drinks they regularly consumed, considering whether they drank coffee, in what quantity, and at what time.
Research findings from the study indicate that individuals who limit their coffee intake to the morning enjoy a longer life expectancy and a reduced risk of heart attacks. Morning coffee consumption has also been linked to a 31% lower risk of death from cardiovascular diseases and a 17% reduction in the likelihood of premature death.
However, a cardiologist cautions that “if you drink coffee throughout the day, these benefits are lost.” Dr Rojas further says coffee’s positive impact on heart health, noting it can lower the risk of diabetes, aid in weight management, and improve cardiovascular health.
This is due to its powerful antioxidant properties. However, the timing of coffee consumption is key as drinking coffee in the afternoon or evening can disrupt the circadian rhythm, affecting hormones like melatonin and cortisol.
This disruption may increase inflammation and elevate blood pressure levels. The conclusions of the study reads: “Drinking coffee in the morning may be more strongly associated with a lower risk of mortality than drinking coffee later in the day.”
What do other studies say?
In another study, it was suggested that drinking coffee earlier in the morning after dawn is linked to a higher risk of death. Yet the study found having coffee and tea later in the morning, befre noon, is linked to a lower risk of overall mortality, CVD, and heart disease in individuals with diabetes.
