As Brits recover from a bitter Arctic blast that brought temperatures as low as -18C, forecasters have warned that another big chill is on the way with below freezing temperatures
Brits have been enjoying milder temperatures in the aftermath of the Arctic blast that brought widespread snow and chaos, but now the UK is set for another spell of bitter cold.
New weather maps have shown icy temperatures spreading across the UK once more, with large swathes of the country set to experience minus temperatures. The latest maps from WXCharts show a large icy blue cold front stretching across much of the UK across Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England.
Areas in Wales, the Yorkshire Dales, Northern Ireland and the west coast of Scotland could face temperatures as low as -4C on Sunday, January 26. Though the start of the weekend will see milder temperatures for most, things will turn colder overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning.
After a cold start on Sunday, things are set to turn milder with temperatures around 4C to 8C across much of the country. According to the Met Office, there’s a strong chance the cold will be accompanied by wetter and windier weather, and even a “risk of snow showers”.
In their long range forecast for January 20 to January 29, the Met Office predicts: “The early part of next week will see fairly quiet, and for most, dry weather with variable amounts of cloud and often light winds. The greatest chance of any rain is likely to be in the far northwest of the UK, and possibly as well in the far south.
“There is a small chance rain could become more widespread, and temperatures are expected to be around average. Later in the week, periods of much wetter and windier weather will most likely eventually become prevalent, from northwest to southeast.
“Ahead of this a colder, more settled southeasterly wind may develop for a time. There is a small chance however, that alternatively winds could turn much more easterly, and colder, bringing the risk of snow showers.”
It comes as Brits just begin to warm up again after an incredibly cold snap saw temperatures plummet to -18C in some places, with residents in Scotland facing the UK’s coldest Janaury night in 15 years. Weather maps have also shown a potential 500-mile blizzard that could bring 10cm of snow per hour on the horizon.
Several major cities stretching from Cardiff in Wales to Inverness in Scotland will welcome snow on Saturday, January 25, according to WXCharts data. North Wales will be blanketed in 10cm of snow by 6am, while 3cm is predicted to fall in Powys. Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Aberdeen and Inverness are also in the firing line, with as much as 12cm falling in the Yorkshire Dales and 9cm blanketing areas north of Manchester.
