A travel expert has revealed the European city you should go to for a connecting flight to save hundreds on a long-haul flight — and it is even a destination worth exploring in its own right
A travel expert has revealed the European city-stopover that could save travellers hundreds on long-haul flights, as well as being a destination worth exploring in its own right.
Sofia in Bulgaria is a savvy stopover location that could help travellers cut costs on long-haul flights to top destinations like Dubai. By flying to the city from the UK, holidaymakers could use the destination as a strategic gateway to some further afield destinations.
TikTok user ‘nicoletravelandlife’ shared the tip in a recent video, mentioning Bulgaria as one of the best countries to consider as a layover on long-haul journeys. Mario Van Poppel, founder of currency exchange platform Manor FX, agrees. He said: “By routing through Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, travellers can secure cheaper long-haul flights to destinations like Asia, the Middle East and even parts of Africa.
“It’s a true hidden gem when it comes to travel savings as its Southeast Europe location is closer to other continents. And it’s a more affordable layover than other European hubs. Not only are flights cheaper, but Bulgaria itself is a budget-friendly location, making it well worth a trip.”
Budget airlines frequently serve Sofia, offering low-cost connections to major destinations and competitively-priced long-haul flights operated by Emirates and Qatar, also depart from the city. Sofia is a great destination itself. It takes roughly three hours to fly from London to Sofia, and flights can cost as low as £18 per way.
“From Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, to Vitosha Mountain, a short drive out of the city, there’s lots to see and do in Sofia,” Mario added. “Visitors will also be treated to hearty local cuisine, such as the cheese-filled pastry called banista and kavarma, a slow-cooked meat stew, at a fraction of the cost to other cities in Western Europe.”
Accommodation is also reasonable in Bulgaria, with mid-range hotels averaging around £40 to £60 per night, while beer usually costs between £1.70 and £2.20. In addition, Bulgaria’s official currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) which is tied to the Euro at a fixed rate, meaning it’s stable and reliable for travellers.
“Bulgaria remains one of the last countries in Europe to still have its own currency,” Mario added. “Another reason to visit now, being independent of the Eurozone means the cost of living is cheaper and it is one of only six EU countries to have its own currency, a bucket list location to tick off.
“The colourful bills also feature notable Bulgarian figures such as Ivan Milandinov and Ivan Vazov, giving tourists a history lesson with every banknote. Other savings can be made by getting your currency ahead of time, so you don’t encounter fluctuating rates trying to get cash in tourist hotspots.”
