Molly-Mae Hague has candidly shared the real reason alcohol gives her ‘anxiety’ and it stems from a sad event that happened years before she met Tommy Fury
Molly-Mae Hague has finally opened up about the shock downfall of her five-year relationship with Tommy Fury after months of speculation.
In her eagerly anticipated new docuseries, Molly-Mae: Behind It All, she’s also shed light on the agonising reasons behind her hatred of alcohol, just hours after her ex revealed his issues with drinking.
The first three episodes of the Amazon show see Molly, 25, speak openly about Tommy’s struggles with booze, which ultimately led to their split. In a recent interview, boxer Tommy, also 25, spoke of how his “cycle” of drinking had torn him and Molly apart while hitting back at rumours that he’d been unfaithful.
In one bombshell episode, influencer Molly, who had been set for the altar with fiancé Tommy, could be seen chatting with mum Debbie about their August break-up, “There were exterior issues that were going on for him that was causing our relationship to have problems.”
When Debbie pressed her daughter about what these “exterior issues” involved, Molly responded: “It’s just drinking, isn’t it.” Although not completely tee total, Molly rarely drinks, and has “anxiety” about alcohol which dates back long before she first locked eyes with Tommy in the 2019 season of Love Island.
Molly, who prefers cosy family evenings at home to drunken nights on the town, told viewers: “I never, ever wanted to be with someone that drank because my mum had a period of time in her life where she struggled because her marriage of 25 years had just ended, and she turned to drink, probably more than she should have.
“And I was only about 14, 15 when that happened, and I saw my mum in some state, going through a really vulnerable time. So I have never, ever, ever been around it in a positive light.”
The social media star went on to explain that while Tommy “didn’t have an alcohol problem”, alcohol had “caused problems for us”. She confessed: “It got to a point where I wasn’t really looking forward to anything because alcohol affected it so much.”
Opening up to mum Debbie in the fly-on-the-wall show, Molly reflected: “He wanted to have a family life, but then also have the life of a 25-year-old boy with no responsibilities. And the two don’t go hand in hand.” Debbie agreed: “It’s heart-breaking. It’s heartbreaking how alcohol has really messed things up. It’s been so detrimental and destructive.”
Remembering one particularly painful incident, an emotional Molly recalled: “At my sister’s wedding, I literally pleaded with Tommy, like I begged him to not drink, and it’s just, I don’t know, it’s just so sad. It affected me. That’s why my relationship with alcohol is really damaged. When you reflect on it, it’s really hard.”
In an interview with Men’s Health earlier this week, Tommy, who shares daughter Bambi with Molly-Mae, described the cheating allegations that had been thrown at him as “complete and utter b*******”. Revealing the true reason behind the split, Manchester-born Tommy explained: “We broke up because I had a problem with alcohol, and I couldn’t be the partner that I wanted to be anymore. It kills me to say it, but I couldn’t. I loved a pint of beer, loved to drink.”
He clarified: “Cheating was never a thing. You can ask Molly this yourself. It was the drink, and the drink is not a good thing. You need to get a grip of it. If you’re in the same spot as me, where you just think that it’s going to cure all your problems, it doesn’t. You wake up even worse, and you want to drink more to try and feel happy again. That’s the cycle of it.
“I’ve got myself out of that now, but I just wish people would’ve taken some time out, rather than giving me so much s*** every day, to think maybe there was more going on.”
In her 2023 memoir, Becoming Molly-Mae, My Story, mum-of-one Molly-Mae revealed that the only ‘major arguments’ she’d had with Tommy were over alcohol.
She wrote: “The only major arguments Tommy and I have had have been to do with him drinking, which he only does a few times a year. He won’t even do anything wrong; I’ll just lose it at him because I hate it. I do have this anxiety around alcohol and the things I’ve seen it do to the people around me – I personally don’t think that alcohol adds anything good to a situation.”
