Manchester United are planning to pay tribute to one of their greatest ever players, Denis Law, this weekend after the legendary ex-striker passed away aged 84 on Friday
Denis Law has sadly passed away at the age of 84
Manchester United will hold a minute’s silence to pay tribute to Denis Law on Sunday.
Law’s family announced on Friday evening that the United legend had passed away aged 84. The Scottish striker scored 237 goals in 404 appearances between 1962 and 1973 and is United’s third-highest goal scorer, behind only Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney.
He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia in 2021 and a statement from his family read: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace.
“We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”
United said in a statement: “Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”
United host Brighton at Old Trafford at 2pm on Sunday in the Premier League and will pay tribute to Law before kick-off with a minute’s silence. Ruben Amorim’s players will don black armbands for the match, following the lead of the United youngsters, who put on black armbands for the second half of their Youth Cup fixture on Friday night.
Law is the only person who has two statues at Old Trafford, underlining his status at the club. In their obituary, United described him as the “darling of the Stretford End” and said he was “idolised by United fans of all ages”. And the words of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson summed up his legacy at the club.
“Denis was a fantastic character, one of the great characters you get in football who absolutely loved the game,” Ferguson once said. “He was a magnificent player. I have always said that he was my hero as a player and he has to be the best Scottish player of all time.
“I idolised him. When I first met him I was so excited. It was at a game in Paris, he had played in the first half and we went for a cup of tea afterwards. For me, he epitomised everything a Scotsman is about. He was daring and courageous, he had that bravado about him and he had style. He was a truly fantastic footballer.”
Law played alongside Charlton and George Best, helping the club to win the European Cup, two English titles and the FA Cup. He also played for Huddersfield, Torino and Manchester City during his distinguished career, while netting 30 goals in 55 games for Scotland to become his country’s joint-top scorer with Sir Kenny Dalglish.
