A stunning, serene seaside town famed for its peace, breathtaking beauty and white sandy beach is consistently named the best destination and it’s not hard to see why
One visitor branded their trip to a seaside village in the UK’s least populated county “truly exceptional”.
There are many seaside resorts along the miles of British coastline to visit. There’s a staycation or day trip with something to suit all tastes. Whether you’re looking for the quaint and traditional with fish and chips and amusement arcades or want something more chic and sophisticated with trendy bars and restaurants, there’s something for everyone. However there aren’t many spots that are consistently named as the best place to visit.
Bamburgh is that place thanks to its stunning landscape, breathtaking beach and serenity. Situated in the heart of Northumberland, which is the least populated county in the country, the village is a favourite with visitors all-year-round.
In 2024 it retained its title as the UK’s best seaside destination for the fourth year running. In a survey of 4,700 people by consumer group Which? it beat Portmeirion in Gwynedd and St Andrews in Fife to the top spot. Respondents described the beach as “magnificent” and “unspoiled” and gave the village five stars for its peace and quiet, and five for its location.
Bamburgh was also listed as one of the best seaside places to live by restless.co.uk. It noted its remote location in “England’s last great wilderness” as a huge draw for those seeking solitude away from the chaos of city life. It said: “Surrounded by windswept beaches and beautiful moorland, the picturesque village is enchanting – boasting cosy pubs and cafes tucked away down side streets, old, snug cottages, and grand houses backing onto vast greens.”
The town is dominated by its most easily recognised attraction – its imposing castle. The Grade-I listed building dates back to 1500 and sits on a 180-ft crag on the sand dunes. It overlooks a beach with incredible views of the surrounding coastline and countryside.
The beach that it presides over is blessed with white sand, perfect for making sand castles in the summer or for long blustery walks in the winter months. It’s possible to spot seals and porpoises from the shore, as well as plenty of seabirds. Nature lovers can also head to the nearby Farne Islands to see the puffins.
Recent visitors to Bamburgh have shared their experiences on Tripadvisor. One who described it as “truly exceptional” added: “Vast expanse of white sand & clean water with very few visitors (even on a sunny day). Beautiful view of Bamburgh castle from the beach.” Another said: “The beach at Bamburgh consistently comes out on top as the best beach in surveys by national newspapers and it’s not difficult to see why. Incredible views and beautiful sand, it’s fantastic place to go for a walk.” A third added: “Having travelled extensively across Britain I can happily report that Bamburgh including town, beach and castle is superb. One of the finest in the entire kingdom!”
