Manchester United are embroiled in the midst of a woeful campaign and while Ruben Amorim might desire some additions, he has been told signings might have to wait for the time being
Jamie Carragher doubts Manchester United will make any signings this month – and believes that could actually be a GOOD idea.
The Red Devils are enduring a rotten campaign despite having already made a managerial change. The weekend’s defeat to Brighton leaves United 13th in the Premier League.
After that reverse, new boss Ruben Amorim slammed his players for being the “worst team” in United’s long history. An obvious solution for the club appears to be some January additions, with Amorim also keen for some signings.
But Carragher – who has already been left baffled by the Portuguese coach’s “ridiculous” comments – claimed United will not be busy in the remainder of the January window. And he even believes that could benefit them in the long run as they target a lucrative summer rebuild.
“I don’t think he’s going to get the players he wants in January,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “We know it’s a tough market to sell players or bring players in. It’s doubly difficult this season because the European competitions have gone into January.
“If I’m Man Utd, I’d be keeping my powder dry for the summer, there’s going to be a lot more movement there where you can get players in and get players out as well. What you don’t want to do is end up spending money and then get to the summer and think these players aren’t good enough to improve this team or the system.
“They’re going to have to go through a lot of pain – we all know that and we accept that. I don’t think there’s too much mounting criticism around the manager. They’ve had a few good results away from home, against Arsenal in the FA Cup and Liverpool in the Premier League.

“We know it’s going to be a rollercoaster because the players aren’t good enough – they’ve shown that with different managers and different systems. I can’t get away from the quote he said, I do not believe that was in his best interests at all.”
Despite Carragher not believing that United will be busy when it comes to recruitment over the coming weeks, they have been linked with a host of new faces. They are on the verge of an agreement with Lecce to sign defender Patrick Dorgu.
The main focus however will be on exits, with a number of stars set to quit the club. Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have both been linked with moves away, while Antony looks primed for a loan move to Spanish side Real Betis.
