Sausage rolls are a British food staple, and now you can make them at home with just four simple ingredients – plus, an expert has shared a method so you can cook them in an air fryer
Sausage rolls, a popular British snack and a staple at any party or winter gathering, can be made tastier with just four simple ingredients.
Becky Excell, a cookbook author and founder of Gluten Free Cuppa Tea, revealed that the secret to baking perfect sausage rolls is to ditch the oven and use an air fryer instead. “They come out even better than in the oven as the dry environment of the air fryer ensures there’s no soggy pastry! Best of all, you can easily make this in just 30 minutes,” she said.
The air fryer not only makes the pastry crispier and more delicious, but it also evenly distributes heat, ensuring all the sausage meat cooks simultaneously, eliminating the risk of an undercooked centre.
How to make perfect sausage rolls in the air fryer
Ingredients
- 280g of puff pastry
- 400g of sausages
- Three tablespoons of wholegrain mustard
- One egg (beaten)
This recipe uses gluten-free sausages and gluten-free Jus-Rol pastry, which is also dairy-free. The beauty of this savoury snack is its versatility – you can substitute the ingredients to suit your preference, even making it vegetarian or vegan.
However, if you opt for meat-free sausage rolls, Becky suggests seasoning them with paprika, cumin, and a dash of salt and pepper, reports the Express.
Method
To kick things off, whip the pastry out of the fridge and let it warm up to room temperature before you get stuck in – if it’s too nippy, it’ll just crumble to bits when you try to unroll it. While you’re hanging about for the pastry, get those sausages out of their skins and give them a good mash-up until you’ve got yourself a nice, smooth mince.
Then, roll out the puff and slice it down the middle lengthways so you end up with two lengthy strips. Be savvy and do this on a cutting board – unless you fancy scratching up your kitchen counters.
Slap a dollop of mustard just shy of the centre along each strip, followed by a generous helping of sausage meat. Flip the pastry over and press the edges together with a fork to keep all that goodness wrapped up tight.
Give the top a brush with some beaten egg, then grab a sharp knife and score some slashes down it. Chop the sausage rolls into whatever size tickles your fancy.
Bang them in the air fryer at 200C for a golden 12 to 14 minutes until they’re crispy and cooked through and through. Whip them out and let them sit for a wee bit – five to 10 minutes should do the trick – before you tuck in and savour those scrumptious homemade sausage rolls.
Becky chimed in with a tip: “Letting meat rest stops all the juices from immediately running out when you bite it, which would make the pastry soggy.”
