Paul Scholes has delivered a brutal verdict on Manchester United’s under-performing squad, claiming he would keep just three of the 11 top stars he was questioned about
Paul Scholes has called on Manchester United to sell summer signings Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee.
United have endured an awful season and now sit 13th in the Premier League table. They have lost seven of their 15 games under Ruben Amorim, since the 39-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag as manager.
Amorim even branded this group of players as the ‘worst team’ in United’s history following Sunday’s defeat to Brighton. The embattled boss has made it clear he believes an overhaul of the squad is badly needed.
And it appears that Scholes agrees, with the United icon calling on his former club to sell six other players alongside De Ligt and Zirkzee. Scholes took part in a game of ‘Keep or Sell’, making his brutal verdict on United’s squad clear.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Scholes started with Onana, who made a dreadful error against Brighton. Interestingly though, the United legend admitted he would keep hold of the Cameroonian.
He said: “I think I’d keep him, I think there’s more to come from him but for now I’d keep him.” Next he turned to De Ligt, who only joined United in the summer from Bayern Munich.
The Dutchman had a difficult start to his time at Old Trafford, but has fared better in recent games. Even so, Scholes would move him on. The former England star said: “He’s done OK of late but I think I’d sell.”
Scholes would also move on De Ligt’s partner at centre-back, Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine is widely seen as one of the better players in Amorim’s squad, but Scholes still delivered a brutal verdict. He said: “The same, done OK of late but I think I’d sell.”
Next came the injury-hit duo of Luke Shaw and Mason Mount. While he admitted he is a fan of both, Scholes insisted he would be looking to sell both of the England stars.

Starting with Shaw, he said: “Really like the player, unfortunately just never fit. Sell.” On Mount, Scholes added: “Again, really like the player, just can’t stay fit, sell.”
Continuing Scholes’ selling spree, the 50-year-old insisted the time is right to move on from Casemiro. He said of the five-time Champions League winner: “Been a fantastic player but I think the time is right to sell.”
While Scholes would sell most of the players he was asked about, the United legend urged the club’s hierarchy to keep both Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. The duo have been linked with exits in recent months, with Scholes making his anger clear at that plan.
He said of Mainoo: “Keep. One of the brighest talents I think this club has got. Definitely keep.” On Garnacho, Scholes added: “Still young, can still get better. Tough one. Just about keep.”
He then delivered a one-word verdict on each of Zirkzee, Antony and Marcus Rashford. When asked about the trio, Scholes simply said: “Sell.”
