“As a precaution the leisure centre evacuated and contacted police, and a 200 metre cordon has been put in place as a thorough search of the area is carried out by specially trained officers,” a police spokesperson said.
“We understand this may be alarming to the local community, and we would urge the public to stay calm and follow the advice of officers, who are there to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you.
“At this stage officers are assessing the threat and therefore we are unable to provide any further information at this time, but will update you as soon as possible.”
The Hereford Leisure Centre confirmed on their Facebook site they had to close. “We have had to unexpectedly temporarily close the entire centre with immediate effect”, it said. “This includes all indoor and outdoor activities. Please forward this message to anyone you know who is planning to visit the centre this evening. We hope to be open tomorrow – Friday 24th January but please check back for an update before travelling to the centre.”
People evacuated from the building were seen gathered outside in the car park as police searched the area. No other emergency services are present. According to local media, officers have now left the site. No further updates have been provided.
