Keir Starmer will call for European leaders to turn the screw on Vladimir Putin’s war machine after Donald Trump threatened new sanctions if the Ukraine war does not end
Keir Starmer will today say it is clear Vladimir Putin is “rattled” by economic woes as he calls on European leaders to help crush his war machine.
The PM will meet European leaders in Brussels for crunch security and defence talks – and he will call on them to turn the screw on Putin’s regime. Russia faces skyrocketing inflation with domestic pressure growing on the warmonger President.
US President Donald Trump has piled further pressure on Putin by threatening further sanctions. Mr Starmer will say: “We need to see all allies stepping up – particularly in Europe.
“President Trump has threatened more sanctions on Russia and it’s clear that’s got Putin rattled. We know that he’s worried about the state of the Russian economy. I’m here to work with our European partners on keeping up the pressure, targeting the energy revenues and the companies supplying his missile factories to crush Putin’s war machine. Because ultimately, alongside our military support, that is what will bring peace closer.”
The US President has vowed economic action against Putin if he fails to end the “ridiculous” war in Ukraine. He wrote on social media last week: “”Settle now, and STOP this ridiculous War! IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE. If we don’t make a ‘deal’, and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.”
The UK and allies have introduced the most punishing sanctions ever imposed on any global economy, No10 said last night. Putin himself has admitted these are causing a “colossal number of difficulties”.
On Monday afternoon the PM will meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, before travelling to meet with the leaders of the 27 EU Member States at an informal meeting of the European Council.
