We’ve been using ghd’s new Chronos Max hair styler for the past month and this is why the larger plates spell better styling, boosted shine and a seriously shortened styling time
If bigger really is better, then you’re going to love ghd’s latest launch. After the huge success of the original Chronos styler last year, ghd’s Chronos Max has launched, and it’s seriously impressive.
With 85% larger plates, you can style bigger sections of hair in no time. And the results? Three times straighter hair in a single pass. Plus, it adds a whopping 90% more shine – yes, you read that right. If you’re after sleek, glossy hair that stays looking fresh all day, this might just be your new best friend.
Here, our Mirror head of beauty Zoe explains why it’s blown all her other heated tools out of the water – including the original ghd Chronos styler that she’s used almost daily since its launch.

I was a Dyson girl through and through until the original smaller-plated Chronos launched last year. After finding it glides through the hair like butter (even through my tangly hair), creating straight or bouncy styles without the need for any skill, it quickly became the only tool I used. However, as someone with long hair that was thickened with extensions, my only wish was that the styling time would be slightly quicker.
It’s like ghd was reading my mind. The tool is larger in size thanks to the plates, but it still feels light to hold. The plates are also cleverly designed to get super close to the roots, so you can style from root to tip, leaving no section of hair untouched. The finish is smooth, shiny, and, dare I say, almost flawless every time.
And, as someone who’s also all about keeping hair healthy (minus the bleach I dose my roots in every six months), the Chronos Max nails it on that front too. It holds the styling temperature at a perfect 185°C, which is ideal for getting results without frying your hair.
I have fine, long hair but this is especially a win if you have thicker or curlier hair, as it respects your natural texture while making sure you don’t end up with heat damage. I never thought I’d pack away my original ghd Chronos stylers but ever since I tested the Max Chronos out, they haven’t been getting any use.
