A woman was left baffled after ordering her favourite meal from a restaurant in Greece and they refused to service it to her – but others said she was being ‘entitled’
A woman’s craving for her go-to lunch dish turned into a dining dilemma in Greece, leaving her less than thrilled with the experience.
While some travellers relish the chance to dive into exotic local dishes, others prefer the comfort of their usual favourites, even when they’re miles away from home. And sometimes, the local dining customs can throw a spanner in the works.
Australia woman named Lia Georgantis found herself in a culinary conundrum on a Grecian beach, after ordering a bowl of eggs, chips, and feta – a combo typically easy to find in the tourist-friendly region. But her request hit a snag when she was told by restaurant staff that eggs were off-limits post-breakfast time, as she recounted in a TikTok video that has since gone viral with over three million views.
Lia, who boasts a hefty 2.9 million TikTok followers and is the CEO of a multi-fashion boutique brand, shared her frustration: “Sometimes things in Greece are just so much harder than they need to be.”
She humorously likened the situation to a Greek tragedy, saying, “I asked in Greece if I could have eggs with chips and feta and they said no, because eggs are for breakfast. So we had to go to the point, like it was a whole disaster for them. They honestly wanted to go drown themselves, it was a Greek tragedy.”
Lia, who got married in Athens, shared that although they whipped her up some eggs just as the breakfast service was closing, her chips arrived a quarter of an hour later rather than with her eggs. When her fries finally came, Lia placed her eggs atop her chips and feta and remarked: “Anyway I got my chips, eggs and feta and common sense isn’t that common. P.S I love Greece.”
However, her gripe about the timing of her meal didn’t go down well with everyone. “If it’s not on the menu, don’t order it,” one person responded. Another chimed in: “Maybe it’s common sense to just respect their customs,” One critic pointed out, “What seems to be harder is just ordering from the menu.”
A further comment read, “Let me inconvenience everyone in the kitchen because I can’t live without a particular thing.” Another user explained: “A lot of times kitchens change over their food prep from one menu to another, so if you wanted both breakfast and lunch then yeah, sorry you’re gonna have to order separately, it’s not a buffet.”
An additional voice added, “Part of travelling is seeing and respecting other cultures. You saying that is so ignorant and entitled.”
Yet, some threw their support behind Lia, with one individual saying: “I agree, every country I’ve been to there are so many ‘rules’ like leave me alone and get what I asked for.”
Someone else argued: “Feta and chips are always available 24/7 in Greece. It’s the fact she asked for eggs that threw them off. It’s just two fried eggs, calm down.”
Another holidaymaker recounted a culinary mishap in Greece, sharing: “Years ago, we went to Rhodes. My husband asked for cheese omelette with chips. They looked confused. When they came back, they had put the chips in the omelette.”
