Manchester City and Real Madrid go head to head at the Etihad tonight, with the two most recent Champions League winners scrapping to remain in the competition
Ruben Dias says Manchester City can outgun Real Madrid tonight and win the Champions League shoot-out between the European heavyweights.
City – winners in 2023 – host holders Real at the Etihad Stadium tonight in the first leg of their play-off tie to decide which side goes through to the last 16.
Real have added Kylian Mbappe to their glittering line-up this season, with their formidable forward line also boasting England star Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo.
But Dias reckons City’s own ‘big guns’ can shoot down the 15-time European champions to breathe new life into their season, having fallen out of contention in the Premier League title race.
“Since I’ve been here, this is maybe the most difficult season so far,” said Dias. “But we have loads of guns in the dressing room and we just have to use them the right way. With the right belief, we are able to do anything.
“Obviously it’s one of the most difficult opponents you can face in the Champions League. We know very well what we’re up against. It’s one of the toughest games you can have.
“We’ve faced many teams who have players who can make a difference – but in the Champions League that’s what you get. We need to be solid at the back – the more solid we are, the more chances we have.”
Dias refused to be drawn on Real’s decision to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony last year in protest at City midfielder Rodri winning it over their winger, Vinicius Jr.
“I’ve never given one second of thought about disrespect over Rodri winning it,” said Dias. “I was just pleased and proud he won it and I was there to celebrate with him.”
City boss Guardiola said he does not fear for his job if his side goes out over two legs. “I don’t know if a doctor or an architect would be asked about his position,” said Guardiola.
“I don’t have that feeling. I’m still here for what we’ve won in previous seasons, otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here. But I don’t think I’m going to be thrown out on the street.”
