Local media has reported that the driver of a white Mini Cooper that smashed into a crowd of demonstrators in Munich was an Afghan national, and that the act was deliberate
An Afghan national is believed to have been responsible for a horrifying car crash in Munich this morning that critically injured two children and injured dozens more.
A white Mini Cooper ploughed into a group of union demonstrators in the Bavarian city earlier this morning in a shock collision that injured 28 people, two of whom were “very seriously injured”. A 24-year-old from Afghanistan was at the wheel of the car when the crash, which also left a child’s life in danger, took place, German media have reported.
The premier of Bavaria said the incident is believed now a “suspected attack” after early speculation suggested it may have been an accident. Joachim Hermann, the region’s interior minister, added the suspect, who was detained at the scene of the crash, was known to police in relation to drug and shoplifting incidents.
Police have confirmed both the age and the nationality of the driver in a statement after earlier confirming that he was secured at the scene of the crash. The service said in an earlier statement: “The driver was able to be secured on site and currently poses no further danger.”
Investigators have also commented on early speculation that others may have been involved in the accident, adding that, based on “current knowledge”, this cannot be confirmed. A spokesperson for local police said: “There is speculation about other people involved. Based on our current knowledge, we cannot confirm this.”
