Back-to-basics device promises to help you write without distractions

By staff20 February 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

The Pomera D250 is already popular in its homeland of Japan and is now heading to the west

There’s no shortage of distractions available when working away on your computer. Emails, social media and the endless supply of funny cat pictures on the internet can make it difficult to knuckle down and crack on with the task at hand.

And now a product designed to keep writing as distraction-free as possible which has been popular in Japan is coming to the west. The Pomera D250 is a simple writing device featuring just a keyboard, screen and word processing program.

It does not have access to the internet, emails, social media or anything else that could distract you. The product is made by Japanese stationary manufacturer King Jim and has proven popular in the country as a way of keeping focussed when writing.

And now the company is bringing the Pomera D250 to the USA through a crowdfunding campaign – which has already surpassed its $10,000 goal. Backers can pre-order the device through the crowdfunder for $374, while it is likely to retail for around $499, according to The Verge. Shipping is estimated to begin next month.

The crowdfunding website describes the device as “the ultimate distraction-free writing tool designed to enhance your creativity with unmatched focus, portability, and functionality”. At 10.3 inches wide and weighing just 621g – about the same as an iPad – it folds like a traditional laptop and, the company says, offers up to 20 hours of battery life.

It has an internal storage of 1.3GB – enough to store around 217 million words. Every one of Stephen King’s books adds up to around 11.2 million words, so that’s probably enough for that report you need to write.

But the storage can be expanded through an SD card slot, and documents can be transferred to PC over USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or through a dedicated app. It can even convert documents into QR codes. This is the first time King Jim has released a Pomera device in the US market since 2018.
