Liverpool are flying high in multiple competitions but Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot has already identified players he does not view as good enough to play at Anfield
Jamie Carragher is excited by how much Liverpool can still improve under Arne Slot – but believes the Reds boss has identified a group of players to get rid of.
With victory over Manchester City, the Dutchman saw his side extend their lead in the Premier League to 11 points. Liverpool have also already reached the Carabao Cup final and the last-16 of the Champions League after leading the group stage.
Slot’s achievements so far have been realised without adding to Liverpool’s ranks in a major way since his arrival. Only Federico Chiesa has been signed to the squad this term across two transfer windows, and the Italian has played a limited role.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher believes Slot has relied upon on a condensed squad of players, after spending the season able to judge his squad. The pundit reckons action in the transfer market will only see the Reds jump to a higher level under Slot.
“What I would say is, and it is an exciting thing for Liverpool, Slot hasn’t bought anyone really,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “They bought Chiesa last minute to cover Salah if he was injured. He is going to know this squad a lot better going into next season and if I’m being honest, he only ever used 14 or 15 players.
“There are probably four or five players in the squad he doesn’t rate. I am not being critical but he is probably thinking now I know what this team needs. While this team is going to go on and win the league title , I still think there’s three positions in this team that can be improved quite a bit.
“I think Liverpool, could bring a left back in, a centre forward in and an attacking midfielder, players coming into the team then maybe certain areas of the team.
“That’s pretty exciting because you would imagine Liverpool have money to spend.”
Despite Liverpool’s impressive season thus far, Slot is not getting carried away however. The ex-Feyenoord coach understands why the Reds’ fanbase may be dreaming of success however.
“There is no secret,” Slot said. “We are 11 points clear but Arsenal has one game in hand. The best attack we had didn’t end in a goal. You always have to adapt to the challenge you have. A week ago we experienced how difficult Wolves at home was. They will always be difficult games, like today.
“It is easier for us to not get excited because we know what we have to put in. This result was more about defence than attack. It is normal for fanbases to be positive and it is important to understand why we are where we are.’
