Keir Starmer announces increase to defence spending
Vladimir Putin’s Kremlin propagandists have reacted with fury to the news that Britain is boosting its defence spending – including one who said the UK is the “perfect” place for Russia to test its nuclear weapons.
Yesterday Keir Starmer announced the biggest increase in defence spending since the Cold War in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine. He confirmed the Government will spend 2.5% of gross domestic product on defence by 2027 – and 3% in the next decade.
In response, Russian media personality Sergey Mardan suggested Britain doesn’t have the numbers to stand up to Russia. “All that remains is to recruit people,” he said.
“The heirs of Wellington and Nelson have huge problems with personnel. Young Englishmen, Welshmen, Scotsmen and even residents of Ulster are not eager to go and knead the mud under a contract with His Majesty.
“But somewhere we need to recruit people for the ‘peacekeeping mission’ in Ukraine. All hope is on Russia, which will not allow this adventure to take place.”
Russian TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov threatened to make Britain a testing ground for Putin’s high-speed underwater nuclear drone, Poseidon, which he claims could sink the UK under a tidal wave.
He raged: “Your island, once again, is perfect for the Poseidon trial […] Well, take it easy, you miserable wretch. [Britain is] a country with bad weather and disgusting food.”
He went on: “But you still think what an amazing island. Just an amazing island. Perfect. Perfectly positioned for a Poseidon test. Amazing island – by the way, I wonder how long the gurgling of Starmer will be visible on the surface of the water after Poseidon’s blow.
“I mean, how many bubbles will he have time to release? Well, that’s a philosophical question, I suppose… Solovyov is counting Starmer’s bubbles.”
TV host Olga Skabeeva – known as Putin’s ‘Iron Doll’ – said Starmer had told the British “by bowing down to Putin, you are not showing patriotism”. She posted online: “Real British patriotism is an eternal war with Russia.”
