One TikToker is making a case for “extreme day trips” to help aspiring travellers explore the Canary Islands on a budget. Her latest video may even have you reconsidering your next staycation.
Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, has cultivated its reputation as a resort capital. The island is a go-to destination for Brits seeking upscale indulgence and a vibrant nightlife. The only downside seems to be the enormous price tag that comes with a Tenerife holiday.
From flight and buses to exceptional food and accommodation, the costs add up quickly for Tenerife visitors. And with the island experiencing year-round sun, even visiting during the off-season provides little budget relief for travellers. As a result, many would-be visitors often head to neighbouring Canary islands like La Gomera, Isla de Lobos and La Palma. But if you’re determined to make it to Tenerife, one TikToker has shared the “extreme” measures she took to visit the island for under £150. The TikToker, known as sarahnicshome, documented her extreme travel day to Tenerife from Manchester in a recent video.
In response to questions about why she only went for the day, the creator said: “It’s literally just for the adventure. I really don’t mind the travel but I do understand it’s probably not for everyone. I honestly can’t believe how cheap it is though.”
The video documents Sarah and her travel companion (her mom) boarding a Ryanair flight from Manchester, arriving in Tenerife and taking in the harbour view from their apartment accommodation.
According to the creator, £150 covered all expenses for her travel to Tenerife, as well as her time on the island after arriving at half-past 10am.
Sarah provides the following breakdown of her expenses:
- Train – £20
- Flights – £35
- Apartment – £45
- Transfer – £2.50
- Food £47.50
The video provides additional context for the figures.
For one, Sarah clarifies the cost of the apartment for one night was £90, which is £45 per person when split between two guests. She also described the building as being outdated, though the apartment was nice. “We weren’t planning on spending any time there anyway really, apart from to sleep,” says Sarah. In the comment section, she confirmed that the apartment she stayed in was Apartmentos Costa Mar in Los Cristianos. The complex offers stunning views of Los Cristianos Harbour, which Sarah highlights in her video, and is fitted with an outdoor pool and bar.
The apartment complex is also just 50 metres from the beach, and the nearby harbour connects travellers to ferries visiting La Gomera and La Palma.
Given that Los Cristianos is only about 23 kilometres from Tenerife South Airport, Sarah and her mom were able to reach their apartment via bus. “The bus is literally just outside the terminal,” says Sarah and only costs £3.20 (slightly more than she listed in her breakdown). Finally, the train and flight costs listed show how much Sarah and her mom each paid for their returns.
In a subsequent post, the TikToker is packing for another extreme day trip to Gran Canaria, another one of the Canary Islands. “The purpose of these trips is to just try and go somewhere a little bit different. And also it’s cheaper than going to London for the day.”
