West Quay Wetherspoon on Brighton Marina has been evacuated after a person died within the pub, as the chain confirmed the tragedy in a statement
Customers of a Wetherspoons were evacuated after a person suffered a cardiac arrest and died inside the pub.
West Quay Wetherspoon in Brighton Marina was forced to close its doors after the tragedy this afternoon. Paramedics were called to the pub earlier today but were unable to save his life.
The chain confirmed the tragedy in a statement. They told The Argus: “Unfortunately we have had a death in the pub. The paramedics tried to save him however were unsuccessful.
“Due to the circumstances it was very stressful on the team, the pub is closed, the team looked after and sent home. The plan is to re-open once the evening team come on to shift in an hour or two’s time.”
Sussex Police told the Mirror: “Emergency services were called to reports of a man in cardiac arrest at Brighton Marina around 2.45pm on Thursday (6 March). Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, a man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene.
“His next of kin have been informed. There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances.”
Today’s incident has chilling echoes of an incident last year when a woman died after collapsing inside a Wetherspoon pub in Cornwall. Emergency services were called to the Try Dowr JD Wetherspoons pub in Lemon Quay, Truro, at 1.50pm on Saturday after a woman collapsed.
Eyewitnesses said the incident happened towards the back of the pub, as they described how the woman had “hit the decks” near a group of young women. Devon and Cornwall Police have now confirmed that the woman who passed away was in her 70s. A spokesperson for the force said that CPR was given to the woman by members of the public who came to help them by paramedics who took over.
The police spokesperson said: “We were called to Lemon Quay, Truro, at around 1.50pm on Saturday 1 March where the ambulance service were responding to a suspected medical episode. A woman in her 70s was given emergency treatment but was confirmed deceased at the scene.
“Her next of kin have been informed. The death is not believed to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.” Punters were asked to leave the pub just before 2pm.
