Jackson’s Bay is just a 15-minute walk from Whitmore Bay and a mere 30-minute drive from Cardiff city centre but it feels a world away from any hustle and bustle.
Just a 15-minute stroll from the sandy beaches of Barry, you’ll find a hidden gem away from the bustling tourists, fairground attractions, and ice cream enthusiasts of popular Whitmore Bay. As spring begins to bloom, this bay becomes an idyllic spot to soak up the weather or see a stunning sunset.
A brief yet steep walk from Redbrink Crescent will lead you to Jackson’s Bay, a sheltered haven boasting pristine coastal views. It’s dog-friendly throughout the year and comes equipped with public toilets, a quaint coffee shack, and even a wood-fired sauna.
This tranquil spot is perfect for a picnic, sunbathing, and relaxing.
You can reach this secluded cove via a picturesque coastal walk around the headland from Whitmore Bay on the Clements Colley Walk. However, it’s advisable to check the tide times as the path may not be accessible during high tide.
If you opt out of the walk, you’ll need to navigate down a steep path along the rich red sandstone cliffs.
Parking is limited in Redbrink Crescent. At the top of the stairs, there are a few free two-hour spots, or alternatively, you can park at Nell’s Point car park which is just a short distance away.
If you’re planning to travel by train, Barry Island train station is only a 10-minute journey away.
Situated just a stone’s throw from Barry Yacht Club and Lifeboat Station, you can grab a coffee or snack from the Knotty Yachty hut nestled within the yacht club railings. Here, you can indulge in a local coffee from the Welsh Coffee Co., treat your dog to a puppuccino, or pick up a panini.
The hut also offers tea, hot chocolates, smoothies, milkshakes, pastries, cakes, hot dogs, sausage rolls, and pasties. It’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 8.30am until 2.30pm during the off-peak season and 8.30am until 4.30pm during peak seasons.
The sandy bay is also an ideal spot for a year-round dip in the sea, with the opportunity to warm up afterwards in Mor a sawna. This wood-burning sauna provides stunning views and shelter from the elements, making it a perfect escape where it’s hard to believe you’re only half an hour away from Cardiff city centre.
The tranquil sauna can fit up to 10 people and can be booked for private or communal sessions. Prices for a 55-minute session range from £12 for a communal session to £100 for private hire, with opening times varying throughout the week.
You can enjoy the hot hut in a variety of ways, from quiet sessions to wellness Wednesdays and sauna and silent disco sessions. If you find yourself falling in love with it, you can even opt for a membership.
The sauna was only opened in July last year and also features a cold plunge pool and cold showers to promote hot and cold contrast therapy.
While it may seem like there’s less to do compared to Whitmore Bay, Jackson’s Bay is far from lacking in activities. Thanks to its proximity to Barry yacht club, stand-up paddle boarding lessons are frequently available and it’s an excellent spot for rock-pooling or enjoying some beach sports.
While Barry’s main beach is known far and wide, Jackson’s Bay is a lesser-known treasure offering a more tranquil beach experience.
