After having surgery in November, Davina McCall has reflected on her terrifying health crisis and given an update on how she’s doing months later
In November, Davina McCall shared that she was having surgery to remove a colloid cyst, a rare fluid-filled benign tumour in her brain.
After her operation at the time, Davina, 57, revealed that things weren’t immediately smooth sailing. The TV star explained that she worried her boyfriend Michael Douglas, 49, as she woke up “confused” after the op. She gushed over her surgeon Kevin O’Neill, and explained that she was focused on recovery.
The Big Brother presenter has given an update on her health months later, and reflected on how she and Michael weathered the storm of such a scary situation.
Davina emphasised how much had changed in her outlook, gushing to Hello: “You have a new look on life, gratitude, love for people, love for nature, love for architecture – everything looks beautiful. It’s different in that way, but not in personality or anything.”
The Channel 4 star added that for her the crisis seemed like it was a click of the fingers, while for Michael it was a long struggle. She added of their very different experiences that “obviously the first two months I had no short-term memory.”
Davina shared that she’s back to work, and is also starting to look back and “unpack” her experience. The star is a mum to kids Holly, Tilly, and Chester, and also detailed how her children coped with her illness.
The TV personality said that her kids were “so pleased” with her recovery, but also recalled: “It was quite funny… I arrived back from the hospital and my son went, ‘Oh, I didn’t know it was that serious.’”
Alongside her son’s reaction, Davina also shared more about how Michael saw changes within her, and said: “I was sort of the same in every other way. I could still do my job, I still loved to dance, I thought I’d just gone a bit more zen. I was meditating a bit.”
Davina also revealed that she visited a hypnotist before her surgery, setting out what she’d experience going into the operating theatre.
She explained that Dr. O’Neill didn’t know that she’d been hypnotised before going in for the surgery. At a gala, however, she showed that she and her doctor are the best of friends.
“I’m very lucky tonight – I’m sandwiched between my boyfriend and my brain surgeon. I’m supporting Kevin because he is very important to us. It means everything for me to be able to be here for him tonight,” Davina said.
She added: “It’s very sobering being here and seeing people who are still living with their tumour, that can’t operate on it or are just looking for those words, ‘it’s stable.’ It’s very emotional for me to know how lucky I am.”
